Landslides in the state of New York make houses hang a few inches from a giant crater

Sunday views in Waterford, New York, show one house hanging on the edge of a cliff and other houses just meters away. Initially, seven houses were evacuated, according to the Waterford Fire Chief, Donald Baldwin. But after engineers examined the area, the number was reduced to three.

No one was injured and no buildings were destroyed.

“Landslides are around 150-200 feet wide,” Baldwin told CNN. “It has a significant injury potential, but it doesn’t exist.”

The 12 people who had to flee their homes were taken to temporary shelters, but they have all since found another place to live now, Baldwin said.

Engineers and other city officials continue to monitor the scene because the slide is still moving, according to Baldwin. Bets have been placed to the ground to see the level of movement, according to the CNN WTEN affiliate.

The Saratoga Regency Sherif’s Office said an unmanned aircraft was also deployed to evaluate the damage.

“The use of drones for this purpose allows all respondents to keep a safe distance from collapse and examine the area above and below the slide without anyone physically having to enter the slide,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook posts.

The cause of the landslide is unknown, said Baldwin, but he noted that the area was once a gravel pit.
