“Living radars” to reduce motorists’ speed

“Live radars” were used Thursday in Laval to educate motorists to slow down in school zones.

Security campaign around schools chanted “Get me off safely!” On children’s backpacks, it is possible to set up a panel that displays the speed of radar and motorists. The backpacks were designed by Traffic Innovation.

Two live radars were used during the 2021 back-to-school period, including Thursday morning in front of Paul-VI School in Boulevard Samson. Young people always keep a police officer with them to make sure the operation is safe.

“When used in a preventative manner, they attract the attention of drivers and naturally encourage them to slow down,” the Laval Police Department said in a press release. The speed display panel also makes it easy to grasp at a glance the importance of being alert and attentive while driving. This concept allows parents, students and passers-by to discuss safe behaviors near schools.

Since the start of the school year, police have made more than 260 visits to school zones around 67 schools.

The next phases of the awareness campaign are planned for November, February and April.
