Major Baseball: The first in the modern age

Chicago White Sox-appointed hitter Yermin Mercedes broke the Major League Baseball record 5-3 at the hands of Los Angeles on Saturday.

The 28-year-old Freshman became the first athlete in the modern Major League era (1900) to score eight hits in several batting appearances in the opening moments of a season.

Mercedes, who appeared on the plate on Friday, took the ball out five times with safety. The next day he got home, double and single. He ended his winning streak in the fourth at-bat of the game when he kicked the ball falling into the opponent’s glove.

“I can never back down. It’s unbelievable to me, Mercedes said at press conferences after Saturday’s game. It’s a new day for me. I want to continue to work well and continue my work on my approach. I want to play every day and I’m very excited.”

Undressed for his team’s first game in 2021, the Dominican Republic native began his career with a batting average of 8.89, eight hits and six RBIs on nine plate appearances in Major League Baseball.
