Tupelo Police Chief John Quaca identified the pilot as Cory Wayne Patterson, an employee of Tupelo Aviation for 10 years.
Patterson has a background in aviation. He had refueled the plane the day before the crime.
Then, around 5 a.m. Saturday, he called 911 to threaten to crash a Walmart in the city of Tupelo.
The shop in question was evacuated and then closed. Intermediaries from the Tupelo Police Department tried to convince the fleeing pilot to land at a local airport, but to no avail.
At the last minute, Patterson pulled out of the intended landing to resume his ride.
Four hours after the dodge attempt, the fugitive made a Facebook post saying goodbye, Kwaka told CNN.
“At that point, we knew he was almost out of gas,” the police chief added.
Patterson eventually landed in a nearby field, where officers were able to arrest him. He is charged with first degree robbery and making terroristic threats.
According to John Kwaka, the federal government may intervene in the case.
