Mazda lifts the mask on the new SUV, CX-50 2023

To identify the bold side, the hood is long, the wheel arches are pronounced, the tracks are wide and the rear line is profiled, not to mention the decals pasted everywhere. Notice the horizontal turn signals at the bottom of the bumper, which are taken directly from the CX-30 and indicate the manufacturer’s new visual signature.

Modern interior

The interior takes a similar approach to the Mazda3 and CX-30 offers with driver-based design. The air vents are centered on the cockpit and an infotainment screen is placed on the dashboard to keep the driver around. In addition to a spacious sunroof for the Mazda SUV, the new “Terra Kota” color is provided on board to enhance the luxury feel.

At the rear, the seats are more welcoming than the CX-5 and the rear doors have openings up to almost 90 degrees, which facilitates access to the ceiling. No indication was revealed for trunk volume.

Familiar engines

Surprisingly, the CX-50 uses engines known to the manufacturer. The 2.5-liter 4-cylinder from the start, whose power has not been confirmed, however, produces 186 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque in other models. Buyers can optionally choose the 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, which is good for 250 horsepower with 93 octane gasoline and 310 lb-ft of torque. All versions come with an older six-speed automatic transmission and are equipped with all-wheel drive.

It also introduced the CX-50 Mi-Drive (Mazda Intelligent Drive), a drive mode selector that aims to make the vehicle more efficient on the road as it is not on the beat track. Four modes: Sport, Normal, Off-Road and Towing. Like other systems of this type it allows you to modify the choice of driving modes, transmission programming, steering calibration and all-wheel drive.

Mazda also took the opportunity to announce that the CX-50 would eventually be offered in a hybrid version, but did not announce a specific timeline.

The CX-50 will be assembled from January 2022 at the Joint Mazda-Toyota plant in Alabama. It will come into dealerships in the spring of 2022.
