The company offers pre-cooked meal services that employees freeze before distributing to seniors or people who have lost their independence.

“They did a good job, I like it,” adds Mr Bouchard. I was paralyzed, I was stuck in a chair [roulante]And I won't stand my ground, so I have no choice.

Meals on Wheels calls for volunteers to provide its service. The help of these volunteers encourages people to stay at home.

“People can stay at home without needing expensive external resources or finding themselves in nursing homes,” explains Eloise Gagne, a volunteer who sits on the organization's board of directors.

Many are still able to stay at home, but just need “a little help,” she said.

Meals are prepared in a kitchen in Montreal's Little Burgundy district. A team of chefs prepares an average of 100,000 dishes a year.

Other volunteers make the delivery, a step coordinated by Cedric.

“About 50-52 meals are being delivered at 10:30 am and peak at 1:30 pm,” he informed. That's a lot to ask of our volunteers, so we have more drivers, more walkers, we can reduce congestion on the roads and make volunteering enjoyable for everyone. »

With an aging population in Quebec, the Meals on Wheels team is currently short of staff to lend their hands.

“At the same time, it allows for a good team building activity to spend time together,” Ms. Gagne suggests. What's unique is that we need volunteers during the week, so that means our pool is a little smaller.

“These are not things you can do in the evening or on the weekend,” she explains.

As for volunteers, their good deeds allow themselves to be encouraged.

“Next year I will do the same with my son,” said one of them. I really want him to learn the spirit of Christmas.

For weaker persons, the service is much appreciated.

“It gives me free time and it's easy for me when I'm alone,” said a woman who uses services provided by Meals on Wheels.

So this help is valuable. This will benefit nearly a thousand Montrealers.
