Montreal Winter: 'Resorts' set up throughout the city, parks open for sports

Montreal – In an effort to attract Montreals outdoors, Mayor Valerie Plante announced Thursday that the city is setting up “winter resorts” in 17 boroughs during the holiday season.

Installations include outdoor furniture, colored lights and aimed at illuminating the open spaces where they live – whether it is a public square, park or parking space.

The goal? To encourage Montrealers to visit the city’s major arteries, hoping to support local businesses struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I doubt people will sit there for hours, because it’s winter, but we want it to be fun and enjoyable,” Plante said of the resorts.

With a price tag of 000,600,000, the stations were designed by local architects and designers with the city’s design bureau.

“In addition to winter resorts, people across Montreal can enjoy many Christmas markets,” Plante said. “Everyone has something and we strongly encourage Montrealians to visit their shopping streets for their holiday shopping.”

In addition to attracting people to the lower arteries, the city has also put forward a sporting event this winter that will allow Montreals to “stretch their legs and get fresh air.”

Plante said all the major parks in the city provide sidewalks for cross country skiing, hiking and snowhoeing, and outdoor rinks are available at many boroughs.

“The great way to bring some joy into our lives in the winter is to make sports a part of our daily routine,” says Plante. “Thanks to our large parks, Montreallers will be able to practice winter sports throughout the island.”

People can reserve rental equipment online for Park Gene-Drop and other parks within the city’s network – and equipment is free for those under 18.

Last month, the city also announced that Downtown parking is free Until some time until the new year.
