“I really feel like I’m one of the best players in the world right now, I play really good tennis,” the Australian said after winning the final in Washington last Sunday. A rare confession of faith from a player known for his temper and erratic behavior on and off the courts.
A former world number one in juniors, Kyrgios made his professional debut with notable wins over Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in his first matches. But he could never demonstrate the consistency of these champions or their mental strength.
“I was in a very dark place mentally, but I’m starting to turn things around,” he admits.
Many people have helped me in this journey, but I have shown serious character to persevere, overcome difficult times and deliver good performances.
