New daily COVID-19 case records in Ontario and Quebec

A sign that the second wave was hitting hard, Ontario and Quebec each surpassed their record in daily cases, reporting 2,447 and 2,349 additional infections, respectively, during the Christmas festivities, respectively.

Commenting on this new horrific record, Quebec Health Minister Christian Dubey said on Thursday that “the holiday break is more relevant than ever.”

There have been a total of 185,872 cases of 2,349 new infections since the outbreak began. In addition, 46 deaths were also counted in the province, for a total of 7,913.

In Ontario, regional authorities registered 2,447 new cases and 49 additional deaths. The previous record was 2,432 infections, reported on December 17th.

In Toronto on Thursday, 646 cases were reported. The suburbs of Peel (502 cases) and York (263) as well as the Windsor-Essex area (173) contributed to the toll.

There were more than 2,000 new cases of SARS-CoV-2 in Ontario for the 10th day in a row on Thursday.

Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott has recalled that for this Christmas, it is important to celebrate only at home with people from your family bubble. “Really connect to stay in touch with your extended family and friends,” she said.

In all, 4,278 of the 165,110 infected have died in Ontario since the outbreak began.

In Alberta, authorities reported “about” 1,100 new cases, but the exact number was not specified. Data related to deaths during the Christmas break were not shared.

A total of 6,730 new cases and 127 deaths were reported from coast to coast, including 224 in Manitoba and 582 in British Columbia.

In Atlantic, seven cases were reported in Nova Scotia, three on Prince Edward Island and two in New Brunswick.

To date, 535,087 Canadians have been infected with the virus and 14,725 of them have died while carrying the disease.
