New NASA images: 'Like a time machine'

The first image unveiled Monday evening of the galactic field will allow scientists to better understand the past and the formation of galaxies.

“It’s like a time machine. A few hundred million years after the Big Bang… we can see images showing the formation of the first galaxies. So the images we’re going to see can go back more than 13 billion years,” says Eric Dupuis, director of space exploration development at the Canadian Space Agency.

Thanks to infrared technology and a stable atmosphere, the James Webb Telescope was able to capture deep images of the universe.

“Imagine you hold a grain of sand just out of reach. And the size of the image you see is the size of a grain of sand there. So it is infinitely small in terms of field of view. And despite everything, what we see in the picture, you see, we see hundreds and hundreds of galaxies sending us a picture from the depths of the universe”, said Mr. Dupuis.
