Fast forward to April 26, 2018. The Cleveland Browns made Baker Mayfield the first overall pick in the annual NFL Draft. After two rounds, the New York Jets had the opportunity to select Sam Darnold. Here are two franchises rubbing their hands with their quarterback of the future for the next fifteen years. Back to the present, Darnold and Mayfield are now on the same group of quarterbacks… the Carolina Panthers! How cruel is the fate of quarterbacks in the NFL.

Mayfield, however, enjoyed success with Cleveland before being dropped by the Browns in favor of the controversial Deshaun Watson. The University of Oklahoma product may not have emulated Drew Brees the way the Browns hoped, but he served Cleveland well, and above all, he did what no other quarterback has done, winning a playoff game in Cleveland. Just two years later, Mayfield was traded to the Panthers.

For his part, Darnold was never able to find his place in the NFL. After a rough stint in New York, he looked on track a few weeks into his first season in Carolina, but the coach went back to being a pumpkin and Darnold was atrocious before being injured for most of the season.

Because both are in the same organization, neither can defend their careers as NFL starters. Mayfield has clearly benefited in camp and Darnold is out with an ankle injury…
