According to the South Korean military, North Korea fired several rocket launchers on Sunday, but the peninsula is currently facing new tensions linked to the multiplication of Pyongyang weapons tests.

Since the beginning of the year, Pyongyang has conducted ten major weapons tests, two of which have been described as North Korean “intelligence satellites” tests and the Continental Ballistic Missile System (ICBM) tests by Seoul and Washington.
“The fire broke out this morning and we suspect it came from multiple rocket launchers,” the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.
“Our military maintains a firm stance of defense readiness by closely monitoring the relevant developments,” he added without elaborating.
Within an hour, at 7:20 am (22:20 GMT), four shots were fired from an undisclosed location in southern Pyongyang province into the sea west of North Korea, the Yonhap news agency reported, citing officials requesting anonymity.
South Korea’s National Security Council has convened an emergency meeting and called for speeding up preparations to “prevent any security vacuum during the country’s transition period,” according to a statement from presidential headquarters.
President-elect Yoon Suk-yol will be sworn in on May 10 after winning the March 9 election.
Pyongyang has long been capable of destroying Seoul, 60 kilometers from the border, with artillery fire.
The United States has about 28,500 troops in the south to defend the country from its neighbors.
Sunday’s firing comes just days after Pyongyang conducted a failed test, which analysts say is a new intercontinental ballistic missile.
Pyongyang is suspected of preparing to shoot down the ICBM, Hwasong-17, known as the “monster missile” by military analysts in the United States and South Korea.
Kim Il Sung, the founder of the North Korean regime, celebrates his 110th birthday on April 15. Many experts predict a missile launch on this occasion.
