In all, online financial services specialist Intuit summed up a press release by the TurboTax platform that “millions of unjustly billed customers will have to pay $ 141 million in damages.”

According to research by prosecutor Letitia James, Intuit ordered these taxpayers to pay for the TurboTax service, which entitled them to complete their refund between 2016 and 2018 and send it for free.

The magistrate also alleges that the company misused the word “free” in its advertisements to mislead consumers.

The deal with Intuit “serves as a wake-up call for large and small companies: fraudulent marketing practices are illegal,” the prosecutor said in a statement.

In a statement released last Thursday, Intuit denied the allegations.

“In addition to keeping taxpayers away from free tax preparation offers, our advertising campaigns have allowed more Americans to file their tax returns for free than ever before,” said Kerry McLean, California Group Executive Vice President.
