Vice Foreign Minister Xi Feng expressed “strong protest” at Mr.me Pelosi on the island, which Beijing considers part of its territory, during her meeting with Ambassador Nicholas Burns.

“This step is very shocking, and the consequences will be very serious,” Xie was quoted as saying by China’s official news agency Xinhua. “China will not be passive.”

M travelme Pelosi, the most elected US official to visit Taiwan in 25 years, has raised tensions between the world’s two largest economies, with Beijing seeing the visit as a major provocation.

The United States will “pay for its mistakes,” Mr. Xie warned and urged Washington to “immediately correct its mistakes and take practical measures to reverse the negative effects of Mr.me Pelosi in Taiwan,” Xinhua reported.

Mme Pelosi landed in Taiwan on Tuesday evening despite a series of warnings from Beijing.

China’s military said it was on “high alert” and would “launch a series of targeted military operations” in response to the visit.

Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said on Tuesday that more than 21 Chinese military aircraft had entered the island’s air defense identification zone, an area larger than the island’s territorial airspace and which intersects with part of China’s air defense zone.

There has been no official comment from Washington yet.
