Grassley was first elected to the U.S. House in 1974 and then to the Senate in 1980. He is chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and will be the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee when the new Senate session begins in January.

Prior to the detention, Grassley spoke on the Senate floor without a mask.
