Stellantis is reluctantly taking a more eco-friendly turn. This change will be phased out from all V8 engines to six-cylinder and electric.
The newest mechanic
If baptized in the name of a hurricane, the six trunks in the lines would not be lost, but we all know that the V8 sound is unequal. Stellantis’ new Hurricane 3.0-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder engine – designed and built from clean slate – is targeted at rear-wheel drive vehicles such as the Jeep Wranglers and Grand Cherokees, Ram trucks and the Dodge Durango SUV. . The company did not specify on which vehicles the new engine would be fitted. Availability will be announced when the 2023 models launch.
Two versions
Hurricane is offered in two versions, the standard version and the high output version. The Straight-Six was discontinued from Stellantis’ US lineup at the end of the 2006 model year, replacing the Jeep legendary – but older – 4-liter Straight-Six with the 2006 V6. 3.6 liters. According to Stellantis, this engine with double overhead camshaft and aluminum block reduces CO2 emissions by 15% compared to similar or larger engines in the Stellantis range. It also has a 3.6-liter V-6 engine. The new engines reduce fuel consumption by almost 15% compared to the engines they replace, although Stellantis does not specify any of these engines. Both hurricane engines are turbocharged. Must have entry level engine
Produces more than 400 hp, while the high-powered version produces more than 500 hp. Torque is 450 lb-ft for the standard engine and 475 lb-ft for the high-output engine.
State-of-the-art technology
To take out the power of the V8 in the Inline-Six, Stellantis went into high-tech mode. Each turbo, for example, powers three cylinders, which increases the response. The dual overhead cams are equipped with phase shifters that adjust the starting time of 24 valves and the direct fuel injection system injects more than 5,000 pounds of fuel per square inch per cylinder. The engine uses spray-on cylinder liners to reduce weight and improve durability – the same process used on the Nissan GT-R.
Offered with V8 Hemi
Stellantis hurricane engines do not replace the prestigious V-8 Hemi (at least not yet), but are provided with it. The hurricane engine, however, can replace the 3.0-liter diesel V6 for light vehicles, developing 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque, which powers Jeep Wrangler and Ram trucks. The hurricane is said to provide comparable power, but is less expensive to produce and more economical to maintain than diesel. These engines are manufactured at a plant in Saltillo, Mexico, with an annual capacity of 250,000 engines.
