The Alouettes have acquired the rights to Laurent Duvernay-Tardif

The Montreal Alouettes have acquired the Canadian Football League (CFL) rights to offensive lineman Laurent DuVernay-Tardif.

The Belle Province club made the announcement Thursday during the second quarter of their game against the Edmonton Elks. Fans at Percival-Molson Stadium also welcomed the news warmly.

The rights to “LDT” were previously owned by the Calgary Stampeders. To get them, general manager Danny Masciocia gave the Alberta team two conditional picks.

Apparently, the Sparrows will send their next second-round pick to the Stampeders if Quebecer signs a deal with the Alouettes or another CFL organization. Additionally, Calgary will also have the option to swap their next first-round pick with “Alls.”

“We are pleased to be able to proceed with this transaction. Laurent wants to be a football icon in Montreal and Quebec. “We can only come out of this transaction as winners because even though he never wore an Alouettes uniform, he can encourage us and publicly present himself as one of our supporters without any regrets,” declared Alouettes general manager Danny Maciocia in a statement.

DuVernay-Tardif played in 54 games over five seasons in the NFL, playing for the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets. He won a Super Bowl with the first team in 2019.

Last June, the 31-year-old Quebecer announced he was putting his football career on hold to focus on medicine and do his residency. He has been a free agent in the NFL since last March.
