(Washington) Steve Bannon, a former adviser to Donald Trump, was sentenced Monday to six months in prison after he was found guilty in July of obstructing an investigation into the attack on the Capitol.

A federal judge will announce the sentence in Washington on Friday against the 68-year-old, who is a moderate populist in the United States, and the parties have sent him their arguments ahead of the trial.

In their memo, prosecutors pinned Steve Bannon’s “contempt, bad faith and contempt” on his subpoena by a House committee investigating the January 6, 2021 attack.

For maintaining this attitude until the end, “he was sentenced to 6 months in prison – the maximum level of punishment – and a fine of 200,000 dollars”, they added in a document attached to the proceedings.

His case “deals with broad issues important to all Americans,” his lawyers responded, seeking a suspended sentence of parole as a result of his appeal trial.

If this option is not chosen, “Mr Bannon will be asked to serve his sentence at home”, they added.

Steve Bannon is considered the architect of Donald Trump’s victory in 2016. Even after being ousted from the White House in August 2017, he remained close to the president and spoke with him the day before his attack on the congressional seat.

Steve Bannon has been summoned to testify and produce documents by a parliamentary commission inquiry tasked with shedding light on Donald Trump’s role in the coup to determine the nature of their discussions.

He refused, citing the president’s right to keep certain conversations secret, and charged him with “obstructing” the work of Congress.

During his trial in federal court in Washington in July, he did not present witnesses and did not speak. Jurors found him guilty after less than three hours of deliberations.

Donald Trump is also being tried by a New York judge for fraud as part of an investigation into fundraising to build a wall between the United States and Mexico, one of his main campaign promises.
