The ferry workers’ strike was called off

The scheduled strike on several crossings, including Tadosak in Quebec, was called off next weekend, the Steelworkers’ Union announced on Tuesday.

The union explained that it had agreed to participate in a compromise session with the Society des Travers du Quebec (STQ) on Thursday in the presence of a representative of the Treasury Board.

“Keep in mind that the previous compromise meeting was canceled by the Society des Travers du Quebec (STQ) on the pretext of not receiving an order from the Treasury Board,” the union said in a brief press release.

In doing so, the strike of the engineer and navigation officers who were to perform at the L’Isle-aux-Coudres, Tadoussac, Sorel, Quebec and Matane crossings from Friday morning to Sunday morning was canceled.

STQ welcomed the decision. “We welcome the union’s decision to postpone the strike for two days to allow for negotiations. The strike does not have to have a significant impact on their travel and the economy of the affected areas,” commented STQ President and CEO Stefan Loughout.

This is the second weekend in a row that the strike on these crossings has been called off. On the other hand, another strike led by employees of the ferries affiliated with CSN was organized and affected the Quebec, Matane and Sorrell ferries.

The unionized workers represented by Steelworkers on relations have been without an employment contract since December 2020. In their opinion, they are aware that they earn $ 8 to $ 10 less per hour than their colleagues in the private sector. Companies.
