Halide is one of the most popular camera apps available for the iPhone, as it allows users to manually adjust focus, exposure, white balance and more before taking a photo. As the iPhone 12 Pro Max is now officially available, developer Sebastian de shared with Holiday’s blog More technical details about the camera of this year’s most expensive iPhone model.
Unlike last year’s models, the iPhone 12 Pro Max camera is different from the camera seen on the regular iPhone 12 Pro. This year users of the Pro Max model will find a new telephoto lens with 47% larger f / 1.6 wide sensor, sensor-shift stabilization, 87% higher ISO and 65mm and 2.5x optical zoom length.
Although most of these specifications are already known, Sebastian explains exactly what the benefits are with these numbers and what they mean in practice to consumers. He created a great illustration to show how big the new iPhone 12 Pro Max camera sensor is. The iPhone’s sensor captures images at 4024 by 4032 pixels or 12 megapixels.
Apple could have added more pixels to the sensor, but instead, the company did something different. The iPhone 12 Pro Max camera sensor has large individual pixels, called “photosytes”. Larger photosynthesis means it can capture more light, resulting in lower noise and higher definition images.
When compared to photos taken on the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, the differences are not noticeable – at least if you capture them during the day. Users will notice the difference between the cameras on both phones as soon as pictures are taken in low-light scenes.
Most people who do not see the dramatic difference are shooting during the day, with a fast ƒ / 1.6 lens. On top of that, Apple’s intelligent image processing combines multiple shots, making it harder to see the hardware.
Here is a comparison of photos taken at sunset with iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. The second photo, taken with the Pro Max model, has a remarkably high level of detail.
The larger sensor helps the iPhone take better pictures, and the sensor shift technology is also responsible for taking more detail images in low light.
As explained by the halide developer, iPhones have had optical image stabilization for some time, which reduces the effect of hand movements while taking a photo. The more stabilized the camera, the longer the exposure time to capture more light.
On the iPhone 12 Pro Max, the stabilization is applied directly to the sensor instead of the camera lens. Since the sensor is smaller and lighter than the entire lens assembly, it moves faster to compensate for hand movement.
The software does not move your hand. Night mode on the iPhone surrounds it by taking tons of photos and throwing away the most moving ones. Now we see the iPhone 12 Pro Max pulling forward – go ahead, really – with its smaller iPhone 12 Mini, 12 and 12 Pro siblings:
Taking pictures with zoom on the iPhone 12 Pro Max allows the new telephoto lens to go up to 2.5x optical zoom against 2x from other iPhones. However, it also means that the lens has a smaller aperture, so users may notice a worse experience when using the zoom on the iPhone 12 Pro Max in low-light scenes.
