In short:
- A super typhoon threatens many countries in Asia;
- Up to 300mm of rain is possible;
- It affects as far as North America.
Typhoon Hinnamnor 2022 is the most powerful system observed on Earth so far.
The storm’s strength is equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale used in the Atlantic Ocean. The heat and weak wind shear of the East China Sea allows it to increase in intensity. It approaches the Category 5 hurricane threshold (again according to the Saffir-Simpson scale).
Heavy rain and wind gusts of up to 300 kmph are likely
Gusts of 250 kmph are likely, gusting to 300 kmph. The Ryukyu Islands, at the southern tip of the Japanese archipelago, will be severely affected. South Korea and the rest of Japan could also be hit by this system, as well as Taiwan (although the effects may be limited there).
Some places, including the Ryukyu Islands, southern South Korea and western Japan, are expected to receive up to 500 mm of rain.
Monster floods are on the radar, and the dangers to civilians are real. Landslides may occur.
The sea will also be dangerous over the next few days and storm surges may wreak havoc on the coasts.
Influence everywhere
The super typhoon is likely to move northward early next week. Cold water causes gradual loss of energy. But he did not say his last word.
A system of such strength can have a significant impact on the weather in North America – and Quebec is no exception. This can actually widen the curvature of the jet stream, promoting cooling or warming over the continent.
At times, the typhoon creates a weather trough that allows cold air from the north to slide toward our latitudes in Quebec. However, it is likely to create an increase in warm air over our regions.
At this point, Hinnamnor’s trajectory was uncertain. It is still too early to tell the exact effects of this powerful storm.
