The new judge entered the Supreme Court

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday appointed Ontario Justice Mahmoud Jamal to replace the soon-to-be-retired Rosalie Silberman Abella.

Mahmoud Jamal was born in Kenya and raised in the UK, migrating to Edmonton, Alberta as a teenager. He later had a fruitful academic career, especially leading to working with Supreme Court Justice Charles Gontier before teaching constitutional law at McGill University in Montreal.

With a background in advocacy and volunteering at various organizations, your Jamal was appointed Court of Appeal Judge for Ontario in 2019.

Ottawa believes Mr. Jamal is bilingual. This is the fourth Supreme Court appointment by the Justin Trudeau government since taking office in 2015.

“I believe that Judge Jamal, thanks to his vast experience in the legal and academic fields and his dedication to serving others, will be a valuable asset to the Supreme Court of our country,” Mr Trudeau said.

The nomination process began on February 19. Since Judge Abella is in Ontario, the appointment of a new judge to the Supreme Court can only be attributed to a judge practicing in Ontario.
