Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s minority Liberal government withdrew from a vote of confidence tonight as the House of Commons voted 177 to 152 to approve the speech from the throne.
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh and his parliamentary caucus voted for the speech after winning some key changes in the law last week.
Those concessions include expanding benefits for workers left unemployed or unemployed by the COVID-19 pandemic and introducing ten days of paid sick leave to Canadians who have to stay out of work due to the pandemic.
The Conservatives and Black Quebecos voted against the speech, and three MPs from the Green Caucasus joined them. Newly elected Green Leader Annami Paul said earlier today that she did not support her party’s speech.
Despite the good things in the Liberals agenda-setting speech last month, the Green Party could not support it because it has no plans to protect those living in long-term care from COVID-19.
“I’m not just talking about seniors. I’m also talking about special needs and people with disabilities,” Paul told a news conference in Parliament Hill. “Those people will not be saved.”
Paul said the speech should adhere to guaranteed incomes so that Canadians can be more resilient to economic shocks.
