In his speech at Independence Hall last week, Joe Biden addressed non-MAGA Republicans who are fed up with this dangerous circus.e The president trained his political establishment.

Sometimes it is very difficult to count and identify them. More often than not, they leave the Republican Party or fear the humiliation of the highest-ranking elected officials who never shrink from dirty tricks or threats.

Trump is hard to oppose

Some hide out of fear, while others do so for political gain. Although Democrats have controlled the presidency and both houses since the 2020 election, Republicans are expected to regain control of the chamber in 2022.

If the picture in Washington is bleak after the recent presidential election, the Republican dominance in the states is impressive. In 30 of the 50 states they are in the majority and here the rules of the electoral game are decided.

So fighting against the tide in opposing Trump and his appraisers requires courage, a long-term vision and a healthy dose of steel-hardened principles. Breaking free from the godfather is likely to lead to brutal internal conflict and electoral defeat.

Despite what I just wrote, Liz Cheney or Adam Kinzinger aren’t the only ones denouncing their party’s drift and Trump’s influence. It is estimated that 3% to 5% of Republican voters would prefer not to show up on Election Day, or worse, to vote against the former president.

I have repeatedly pointed out that it is Trump’s gift to channel this mixture of anger and misinformation, but this tendency predates his arrival on the political scene. Many lawmakers are worried behind the scenes, dreaming of Trump’s departure to surf disaffected elites, including the Republican Party.
