Trump seeks to prevent his tax returns from being sent to Congress

Washington, United States | Donald Trump’s lawyers on Wednesday appealed to Congress to try to prevent the U.S. president’s tax returns from being sent to Democrats, arguing that he was specifically targeted for political reasons.

His claims were “targeted by President Trump because he is a Republican and a political opponent,” his lawyers said in a statement filed in federal court in Washington about “revenge.”

The Democrats, who control Congress, have been trying for years to get tax secrets from the 45th President of the United States, who consistently refused to release his tax returns after the 1970s when the billionaire made his fortune a propaganda argument.

In a major step forward for Democrats, the U.S. Justice Department on Friday directed the Treasury to “provide this information” to the House of Representatives.

The commission, which is responsible for tax matters (“ways and means”), called for six years of tax returns before Donald Trump’s arrival at the White House in 2017. It states how the US tax authorities (IRS) would like to study the regulation of presidential economies.

Argument rejected by Donald Trump lawyers.

“Although the House Democrats have submitted countless justifications for obtaining presidential tax returns, no one at the time expressed a desire to know how the IRS presidents were audited,” they wrote.

“The demands are specifically designed and will only affect President Trump in practice,” they stressed.

The Justice Department made the argument Friday, writing that “some congressional officials are likely to expect Donald Trump’s tax returns to be published only to embarrass him.”

However, these motives do not make it possible to validate the Commission’s request because it “clearly provides legitimate legal objectives”.

Ahead of the November 2020 presidential election, the New York Times published a survey based on 20 years of tax data on a former real estate mogul and his group.

According to the newspaper, he paid only $ 750 in federal tax in 2016 and has done nothing in ten years in the last fifteen years, reporting losses more than profits.

Donald Trump denies “fake information” and promises to “pay a lot of taxes” without giving further details.
