One-third (33%) of Canadians believe that food servers deserve a tip in all cases, even if the service they provided is poor. Conversely, more than three in ten Canadians (31%) say they would not leave a tip if they received below-average service at a table-service restaurant when their server was clearly not busy.
Should we put some extra money when we prepare our meals to take home or when we order at a restaurant without table service? According to the results obtained in the survey of the Canadian organization, these questions are not unanimous.
More than half of Canadians (53%) say they never tip when they visit a take-out snack bar, and more than two in five (49%) when they visit a cafeteria-style restaurant say they never tip when they visit a restaurant where they order food. Choose themselves (48%) or a cafe (43%).
Regardless, a majority of people (70%) agree that “food servers don’t just get by on their salary, tipping them is important.”
The study was conducted online from December 10-12 among 1,000 adults in Canada.
