Indian Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister Paswan was admitted to a city hospital on September 11 and underwent heart surgery on October 4.
In his role as food minister, Paswan oversaw the largest food welfare program in the world. Under its multi-billion dollar food aid, the government will provide the cheapest rice and wheat to millions of poor people in India.
During his long political career, Paswan served with several Prime Ministers and served as the Minister of Mines, Steel and Telecommunications and Information of India.
Paswan and his party represented the socially backward classes of India, which constitute one-third of the majority Hindu population, which is 80% of India’s 1.3 billion population.
Paswan’s home state of Bihar in the east has significant support for the LJP.
State elections in Bihar are set to begin in late October and expand in three days, with Chirag Paswan, a legislator, leading the LJP to the state legislature.
