The star of “Men in Black” and “Independence Day” already apologized in a press release the day after these bellows, which overshadowed the entire evening of the Oscars on March 27. Will Smith further explained his feelings this time.
“I reached out to Chris and the message I got back was that he wasn’t ready to talk and that he would contact me when he was,” he said, wearing a white cap, in the nearly six-minute video shared on social media.
“So I’m telling you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior is unacceptable, I came here as soon as you were ready to speak,” he said sitting on an armchair surrounded by greenery.
He also apologized to Chris Rock’s mother and brother, as well as his own family, including his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.
That evening, a joke from Chris Rock about shaving his head, suffering from alopecia – a disease that causes severe hair loss, which she revealed she suffered from a few years ago – led to a ‘scandal’.
Will Smith suddenly came on stage and slapped Chris Rock under the dumbfounded stares of celebrities and onlookers.
The 53-year-old actor – who shortly won the best actor award for his role in ‘The Williams Method’ – shouted at him: “Get my wife’s name out of your mouth!” Once back in his chair.
“I’ve spent the last three months replaying it and trying to understand the intricacies and intricacies of what happened,” Will Smith said in his video.
“I’m not trying to interpret all of this right now, but I can tell you that there was no part of me that thought that was the right way to behave at the time,” he added.
He explained that he was trying to “repent without being ashamed” of himself, saying that he was deeply sorry for disappointing his fans.
“I’m human and I make mistakes, I try not to feel like an ass,” he concluded.
