The CDC said in its new guidelines that cloth masks act as a “source control” to prevent wearing virus cells and provide a “filter for personal protection” by preventing infectious droplets from infecting others.
In many cases, when authorities told people to wear masks, infections and deaths dropped significantly, the CDC pointed out.
“Adherence to universal masking procedures can help prevent future lockdowns, especially if combined with other non-invasive interventions such as social distance, hand hygiene and adequate ventilation,” the CDC said.
The agency said in a financial analysis that a 15% increase in universal masking could prevent losses of up to trillion tr trillion.
“The relationship between source control and personal protection is complementary and possibly synergistic, thereby increasing personal benefit with increasing community mask use,” the CDC said.
Some textile masks are as good as surgical masks in preventing drops, the CDC said. Polypropylene produces a static charge that captures particles, the CDC says, making silk repel moisture droplets and be more comfortable.
“Multi-layer fabric with high thread counts performed better compared to single layers of fabric with lower thread counts, filtering 50% fine particles less than 1 micron in some cases,” CDC said.
“This is a two-way street,” Dr Anthony Fauzi, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told MSNBC on Tuesday. “You protect others, their mask protects you and your mask protects you too.”
