Seoul | Kim Jong Un, an influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, on Tuesday blew up Seoul’s “treacherous” attitude towards US military maneuvers between South Korea and the United States, warning allies that they face serious security threats.
Kim Yoo Jong, one of her brother’s closest advisers, condemned the “dangerous” military exercises jointly conducted by Seoul and Washington earlier this month, which he hopes will be a repeat of the Pyongyang North invasion.
“I take this opportunity to express my deep regret for dealing treacherously with the South Korean authorities,” she said in a statement released by the North Korean official agency KCNA.
The South Korean and U.S. forces began basic training on Tuesday ahead of their annual summer exercises next week.
By conducting these military maneuvers, she warned that Seoul and Washington would “certainly face greater security threats”, adding that the North would strengthen its defense and forward attack capabilities.
Kim Yo-jong’s statements came despite a series of personal correspondence between his brother and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, which unexpectedly melted down on the Korean Peninsula.
Border exchanges on both sides, which had been disrupted for more than a year last month, have been restored, reassuring leaders that they have agreed to work to improve their relationship.
Through the Treaty of Seoul and Washington, the Allies, the United States deployed nearly 28,500 troops in South Korea to defend the country against its nuclear-armed neighbor.
They have already reduced the scope of their annual joint military exercises to facilitate nuclear talks with Pyongyang.
South Korean President Moon holds the credit for the first summit talks between North Korea and the sitting US president in Singapore in 2018.
However, the failure of the second summit between Kim and then US President Donald Trump in Hanoi cut off relations with northern Seoul, and nuclear talks stalled.
