Russia reported more than 1,000 deaths from COVID-19 in the first 24 hours

Russia surpassed the symbolic limit of one thousand deaths daily due to COVID-19 on Saturday, a sign of a full-scale epidemic in the wake of slowing vaccinations and very limited limitation measures for the population.

The official government census shows 1,002 deaths and 33,208 new pollution, the third day in a row. Russia is the worst hit country in Europe by the coronavirus.

According to official data released on Saturday, only 32% of Russians have full immunity.

Although many areas have reintroduced the need to provide QR codes to access public spaces, the virus is spreading because government health restrictions are very limited.

The Kremlin, anxious to protect the economy, rejected all controls at the national level, while ruling that the low vaccination rate for the population was “unacceptable.”

Health Minister Mikhail Mourashko this week questioned the behavior of Russians’ reluctance to vaccinate.

“People in our country are in the habit of over-counting themselves,” Alexei Kauznetsov, a 48-year-old entrepreneur, told AFP on Saturday.

“It’s no big secret: a lot of people are buying fake vaccines, certificates. They don’t trust the vaccine and don’t get vaccinated, so there is no protection,” said Ilya Demidov, a 26-year-old emergency physician who believes the situation is “borderline on disaster.”

More than half of Russians do not plan to get vaccinated, independent polls show.

Since the outbreak, the government has officially registered 222,315 deaths, the highest in Europe. The Rosestat Statistics Institute, which has a broad definition of coronavirus-related deaths, has reported more than 400,000 deaths.
