A lifeless body was found in the river late in the morning near Saint-Croix. All suggest that it was a hunter who disappeared a few hours ago.
Since 7 a.m. Sunday, Sûreté du Québec (SQ) has been trying to find a hunter who capsized from a boat on the river between Portnew and Saint-Croix.
There were three hunters on the boat at the time of the incident. A man who accompanied them from the shore contacted the authorities. Firefighters recovered two people who had drowned, but a third man had fled.
“The 40-year-old was wearing his life jacket, so there is always hope that he will be able to get back ashore. But the water is very cold,” said SQ Sergeant Helen Nepton in the morning.
However, a body was found around 11:30 a.m. near Ru du Bato in Saint-Croix. Although verifications are yet to take place, according to Sergeant Louis-Philippe Beebu, all indications are that it was a missing hunter.
The Provincial Police Force surveyed the north and south banks of the river between Donacona and Saint-Croix throughout the morning. Quad riders, police on foot, along with an SQ helicopter deployed the Coast Guard on the ground.
