Load shedding at CHU de Québec-Université Laval

CHU de Québec-Université Laval will postpone thousands of appointments and close operating rooms on Wednesday to treat a large number of COVID-19 patients in hospitals in the area.

This load shedding is necessary because about 800 staff are alone or ill.

No positive employee has come to work since Health Minister Christian Dubey suggested it was necessary to prevent further load shedding.

“We need to understand now that the elastic is very stretched and we see white in the middle,” said Martin Beaumont, founding president and CEO.

Reduced activity

From January 5, operations in operating theaters will drop by 56 percent. Thus, approximately 300 surgeries are postponed each week.

This strategy will evacuate 60 nurses to focus on areas where COVID-19 is hot.

In addition, nearly 10,000 non-essential face-to-face appointments can be postponed or made remotely per week. It empties almost 50 speakers.

“The current situation with regard to our workforce is huge. The challenge is great and our staff is now dedicated,” Mr Beaumont stressed.

He reminds the Quebecars to be patient and understand the situation.

Chowder-Appalaches

The situation is difficult even in the Chowder-Appalachians.

A total of 71 people were hospitalized for CISSS COVID-19, nine more than the day before. This includes 14 patients in intensive care, so an increase of two from Saturday.

The number of employees who are in isolation or positive reached 772 on Sunday. Employees who did not have certain characteristics were able to return to work.
