The Russian negotiator is seeing ‘progress’ in the talks

The Russian negotiator said on Sunday that talks between Kyiv and Moscow were progressing and that diplomatic relations were growing despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the ongoing fighting.

“If we compare the position of the two delegations at the beginning of the talks and now, we will see significant progress,” said MP Leonid Slutsky, who was part of the Russian delegation to a recent meeting with Ukrainian negotiators in Belarus.

“My personal expectation is that this progress will soon lead to a normalization between the two delegates and the documents that need to be signed,” he said.

Since the start of the Moscow military offensive on February 24, three rounds of talks have been held in Belarus. They focused primarily on creating humanitarian corridors for citizens.

On Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministers Sergei Lavrov and Ukrainian Dmitro Kouleba left talks in Turkey without announcing clear progress, but pledged to continue their talks.

On Sunday, Mikhail Podoliak, one of the advisers to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zhelensky, tweeted that Moscow had stopped issuing “ultimatums” to Kyiv and had begun “carefully listening to our proposals”.

He said Moscow had taken a “fundamentally different” approach to the talks. Zelensky stressed on Saturday that his counterpart Vladimir Putin had seen “positive progress” in the talks on Friday.
