In Quebec, mothers have the right to breastfeed their children in public, Women’s Minister Isabelle Charest said on Tuesday.

A young woman’s mother was arrested Saturday afternoon by security guards while breastfeeding her 4 – month – old baby on a bench in the Eaton Center, claiming it was a “spiritual and personal gesture.” “Outraged”, Isabelle Côté condemned the company’s customer service situation and initiated a complaint process with the Human Rights and Youth Rights Commission.
What happened at the Eaton Center in the eyes of Minister Charest was simply “unacceptable”.
“The right to breastfeed your children in public and in 2022 no one should question this,” she said in a written statement sent to our parliamentary office.
In 2005, the Human Rights Tribunal ruled that a furniture store was violating a woman’s right to receive equal treatment regardless of gender by excluding her from public space because she was breastfeeding her toddler.
Two years ago, the court came to the same decision regarding the city of Montreal, which excluded a mother from the municipal courtroom because she was breastfeeding her son.
