Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has not had the expected effect on the budget increase allocated to defense. The new amount of more than $ 8 billion over the five years included in the 2022 budget represents only a 0.1% difference from the already planned expenditure for the 2026-2027 horizon.

In doing so, Canada is cutting its military budget from about 1.4% of its GDP to 1.5% by 2024, far from the 2% threshold recommended by NATO.
In addition to this statement, Ottawa has launched a comprehensive review that “focuses on the size and capabilities of the Canadian Armed Forces, their roles and responsibilities, and the resources needed to keep Canadians safe and secure. Operations worldwide.”
Finance Minister Christiana Freeland, in a press briefing on Thursday afternoon, provided a clear picture of the priorities that such a review should focus on in the Ministry of Defense.
