From May 2023, Publisac will not be delivered to all addresses. Instead, according to the principle of voluntary membership, you must give your consent to receive at home.

The city of Montreal will distribute a green sticker to those who request it, pasting it into their mailbox so they can continue to receive it.

“We aim to achieve zero waste by 2030. To achieve this, we must reduce the amount of material that goes into landfill by 85%, explained Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante. Yes, we must recycle and reuse, but above all, we need to reduce at source.

Currently, about 800,000 publications, or over 40 million, are distributed each week in Montreal. At the Lachin Sorting Center, they occupy a ratio of 10% of all processed ingredients.

In 2019, following a petition, the City held a public consultation in which 82% of the people agreed to set up a voluntary membership system.

Last week, a report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) indicated that immediate action was needed to combat climate change.

“It is time to show courage for the population and for our planet. Decisions are not always easy, but the right ones. Status quo is no longer an option,” Ms Plante reiterated.
