At a Security Council meeting on Ukraine in the presence of Russia, the US diplomatic chief declared that “President Putin cannot be avoided”.
Condemning recent escalation, including a referendum on annexation in Russian-controlled territories, he told his council colleagues that “today this international order that brings us together and that we are trying to protect is crumbling to pieces before our eyes.”
“President Putin has chosen this week, when most of the world’s leaders are meeting at the UN, to fuel the fire he has lit, demonstrating his complete disregard for the UN Charter.”, he reiterated.
The meeting will be held in the presence of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, but he will not sit at the council table during the ministers’ speeches, he will be replaced by his deputy.
