Longueil proceeds with the slaughter of deer

The city of Longueuil will finally go ahead with the slaughter of deer in Michel-Chartrand Park, Quebec’s Superior Court ruled in a decision on Tuesday.

The court decided to deny a request for a protective order submitted by the organization Savage Animal Rescue, represented by lawyer Anne-France Goldwater.

“Following the Superior Court’s decision today denying the Safeguard Order on file, the City of Longueuil has announced that it will maintain its schedule regarding the deer herd reduction operation in Mitchell Park. -Chartrand,” commented the city in a brief press release.

Therefore, the city moves forward with a plan to slaughter dozens of deer to preserve the ecological balance of Mitchell-Chartrand Park.

“The full response plan, including the dates of closing the park and other methods to be implemented, will be communicated to the population soon and before the start of the hunting seasons”, underlined the city.

Opponents of deer herd reduction have no intention of giving up. According to TVA Nouvelles, Mi Goldwater intends to appeal the Superior Court ruling.

The court heard both camps last Wednesday, before announcing it would deliver its decision in the coming days.

Deer supporters hope that the court will at least protect the deer until they argue the merits of their case in court on December 9.
