  • In May, Prime Minister Jason Kenney announced his resignation as United Conservative Party leader after winning 51% of the leadership vote.

  • Former Finance Minister Travis Toews was the first to enter the race in late May, followed by two former ministers, Rajan Sawhney and Rebecca Schulz.

  • Candidates for Chestermere-Strathmore MP Leila Ahir, Fort McMurray-Lac La Biche MP Brian Jean, former Wildrose Party leader Daniel Smith and independent MP Todd Lowen were later confirmed.

  • The evening of October 6 marked the end of more than four months of campaigning to replace Jason Kenney as Alberta premier.

  • Polls and political commentators quickly put Daniel Smith in the lead. His Alberta Sovereignty Bill and accompanying criticism dominated the campaign.

    Former Wildrose Party leader Daniel Smith took over as leader of the United Conservative Party after six rounds of voting. In her victory speech, Danielle Smith indicated that she would be sworn in as Prime Minister on Tuesday and be replaced by Jason Kenny.
