Quebecer Leila Fernandez lost in three sets to world number 14 Belinda Bencic in the first round of the Guadalajara tournament in Mexico on Monday.
Fernandes, ranked 41st in the WTA rankings, lost 7-5, 6-7, 6-3 in a battle that lasted 2 hours and 46 minutes.
Fernandez lost serve five times in the encounter and after leveling the score by winning the second set tiebreaker, she was unable to keep pace with her opponent in the final set. Bencic will face Sloane Stephens in his next match.
After winning their first two encounters, Fernandes suffered his first career defeat at the hands of Bencic.
For their part, Canadians Bianca Andreescu and Rebecca Marino won their first matches.
In the first round of the tournament, Ontario’s Bianca Andrescu easily defeated Switzerland’s Jill Teichmann 6-2, 6-4.
Mississauga native Andreescu won 61 percent of her first-serve points, outscoring her opponent five times out of seven. The 22-year-old now clashes with Petra Kvitova.
British Columbia’s Rebecca Marino also won her first round match against American Ann Lee in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 (2).
Marino had 11 aces against just one double fault and she converted three of her 10 break chances. Lee committed five double faults and registered only one break on three occasions.
The Vancouver native will face 10th seed Caroline Garcia of France.
