Joe Biden’s party confirmed its majority in the US Senate on Tuesday after Democratic candidate Raphael Warnock won a poll in Georgia.
This election sequence is strengthening for the US President who predicted that he will suffer a heavy defeat in the mid-term elections.
His party’s candidate, Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock, opposed Donald Trump’s protege, Republican Herschel Walker, for the final act of these “midterms.”
The two men had already faced each other in November and had to hold a second round to decide between them.
Minutes before the announcement of the results, the US President appeared to be extremely confident. “We will win, we will win in Georgia,” he told reporters.
The victory will not change the balance of power in the US Congress: Democrats have already ensured control of the Senate after the first round of legislative elections in November. Meanwhile, Republicans took over the House, but with a much smaller majority than expected.
But this new seat gives more freedom to Joe Biden’s party, which has governed by the slimmest of majorities for the past two years: 50 seats out of 100.
Among other things, it enables greater influence in key parliamentary committees. And moderate Democratic Senator Joe Manchin said the grave would significantly limit the impact of many of the Biden administration’s major projects.
With the seat, Republicans, for their part, hope to provide broader veto powers to Joe Biden’s policies. With 700 days to go until the next election, the opposition is desperate to break the momentum of a president bolstered by these good results in the “midterms”.
Candidate Donald Trump’s defeat is the latest example of the Republican “wave” promised by the former president in the midterm elections not materializing. This did not prevent the Republican, embroiled in various scandals and legal problems, from declaring himself a candidate for the presidential election.
A sign of the importance and interest of this final duel in Georgia: About $400 million was injected into the ballot, the most expensive of any midterm election. Some polls have backfired on the candidates.
To realize their ambitions, Democrats have called on their heavyweights to protect them. Former President Barack Obama, arguably one of the party’s most charismatic figures, campaigned in Atlanta last week, for example.
Historically Republican, Georgia surprised America by preferring Joe Biden to Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election, then sending two Democrats to the Senate two months later.
The state, which borders Florida, is again at the heart of all the passion, fueling the candidates’ distinctive profile.
With numerous athletic records, Republican Herschel Walker, considered one of the greatest players in college football history, entered politics late in life.
The 60-year-old is being sought to succeed Raphael Warnock, who served as a pastor at Martin Luther King’s former desk in Atlanta before becoming a Georgia senator in 2021.
But Trump’s campaign for the pro-African-American candidate has been splashed by several scandals. Herschel Walker, known for his anti-abortion positions, has been accused of, among other things, pushing his former colleagues to have abortions.
