Dustin Johnson, FedEx Cup-winner of the 2020 Tour Championship, is running his red-hot summer into the winged feet as a betting favorite to win the 2020 US Open. However, after 18 holes, Johnson dropped to 11th on the odds board at 33-1, with Justin Thomas (4-1) taking first place.
The first of six majors played in the 2020-21 season, the US Open on Thursday surprised many by playing much lighter than expected. That shouldn’t be the case in the last three days, which means the tournament and the first major trophy of the year still (almost) have to be won by someone.
Rory McIlroy (7-1), behind Thomas, who shot the lowest U.S. Open round in winged football history, sat two shots behind the captain he landed on Friday. McIlroy is suffering from a widespread severe drought, yet fighting the tough course may be the right US antidote for him as he seeks his second US Open and fifth major championship.
He finished in the top-10 in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, finishing his 2019-20 season on a high note after playing well in the 2019 Tingles in a row. If Rory could start the season like his last – with six top-5 finishes in a row – he would be in great shape to become a factor again this weekend. McIlroy has not had much success since 2015, but has made another breakthrough with two of the top-10 US Open finale in his last five attempts.
Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson were nowhere on the odds board after going 3 overs and 9 overs respectively in the first round. Mickelson will also be praying for a cut, with Woods trying to do so in the second round on Friday.
