McCar Calder of Avalanche won the trophy as an NHL rookie

Kale Maker The Colorado Avalanche won the Calder Trophy as the NHL Rookie on Monday.

21-year-old defenseman Avalanche / Quebec is the sixth player in Nordic history to win the award, Peter Stastney (1980-81), Peter Forsberg (1994-95), Chris Drury (1998-99), Gabriel Landescog (2011-12) and Nathan McKinnon (2013-14).

“I am very honored and humbled to accept this Calder Trophy,” McCarthy said. “I can’t thank enough of each of my avalanche colleagues. Honestly, I owe them tons for my success this season and it’s so much fun to compete with those guys.”

Maker has led the NHL rookie defense in goals (12) and power-play goals (four) in 57 games this season. Among the NHL rookies, he finished second on assists (38), points (50) – a one-season defenseman’s Avalanche / Nordics record – and power-play points (19). He scored four game-winning goals, a plus-12 rating, and averaged 21:01 snow time per game (third among rookies).

Makar helped complete Avalanche with his second-best record at the Western Conference (42-20-8, .657 points) and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third season in a row. In the postseason, he scored 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) and had a plus-12 rating in 15 games for Colorado, which lost to the Dallas Stars in seven games in the second round of the Western Conference.

Maker said he believes Avalanche has a bright future.

“It will be exciting,” Maker said. “It’s fun times in Colorado and we definitely have a bunch, so I know everyone on the team is really excited. To the great fans of Denver, I and our team really appreciate the amazing support you have shown.”

McCarr finished with 1,538 points, including 116 first-place votes in the voting for the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association award before the start of the post-season.

Vancouver Canx Defense Man Quinn Hughes And the Chicago Black Hawks ahead Dominic Cuban Other finalists for the award. Hughes had 1,337 points (53 first-place votes), while Kubalik had 554 points (no first-place votes).

Hughes, a 20-year-old defenseman, led the NHL rookies on assists (45), points (53) and power-play points (25) in 68 games and was second in average snow per game (21:53) behind the Edmonton Oilers defenseman Ethan Bear (21:58).

Kubalik, a 25-year-old forward, led the NHL rookies on goals (30), even-strength points (38) and even-strength goals (26) and was third with 46 points from 68 games.

The 2020 NHL Awards are scheduled for June 18 in Las Vegas, but have been postponed to March 25 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.
