A magnitude 7.2 earthquake shook southern Peru on Thursday, the US Geophysical Institute (USGS) said, causing no casualties.
The epicenter was reported at 7:02 GMT, near the town of Ajangaro, near Lake Titicaca, at a depth of about 200 kilometers, the institute said.
The Peruvian National Seismic Center recorded a magnitude 6.9 earthquake at a depth of 240 km.
The epicenter was reported below the Pacific Ocean floor, however; no tsunami alert was issued.
“Currently, due to the intensity of the tremors on the surface, it should not cause damage, but should be feared,” Hernando Tavera, director of the Peruvian Geophysical Institute, told RPP Radio. .
“Earthquakes are less likely to occur when the earthquake is deeper. The eclipse radius is greater than the jolt. The entire southern part of Peru was affected by the quake, ”Mr Tavera said.
Peru is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a vast zone of seismic activity extending along the west coast of the Americas. The country is shaken by at least 400 significant earthquakes each year.
