Artificial intelligence: Amazon invests up to $4 billion in Anthropic

Amazon on Monday announced a $4 billion investment in American artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic, which is developing a competitor to ChatGPT, accelerating the global race towards these technologies.

With this partnership, the online commerce and “cloud” (remotely accessible data hosting) giant will take a minority stake in Anthropic, a chatbot competing against Cloud, ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence tool popularized by Open AI.

Anthropic, for its part, uses chips from Amazon Web Services (AWS), the world’s largest “cloud” company developed specifically for building machine learning models.

Key to the deal, according to Amazon, is the acceleration of Anthropic’s future chatbot models, which AWS customers will have access to.

Artificial intelligence, known as “generative”, is capable of generating new content from learning data, whetting the appetite of internet giants. A few days ago, Amazon announced that its virtual assistant Alexa is equipped with AI.

Microsoft, for its part, indicated last Thursday that it would integrate OpenAI’s new generative artificial intelligence interface into its Bing search engine.
