The Canadian Ministry of National Defense announced on Sunday that Canada has decided to “temporarily” replace some of its military personnel stationed in Ukraine, Europe, due to the situation in the region.

The ministry said in a press release that this temporary replacement of “elements” assigned to the training of the Ukrainian military would not mean the “end of the mission” of the Canadian military, but would allow Canada to “redirect” its efforts to ensure the safety of members of the Canadian Armed Forces.
Ottawa did not provide details on the number of soldiers involved or where they would be relocated.
About 200 Canadian soldiers have been deployed in Ukraine since 2015 as part of the UNIFIER mission, which contributes to the training of Ukrainian troops.
“The Canadian Armed Forces are committed to the people of Ukraine and to their mission to enhance the capabilities of the Ukrainian security forces,” Ottawa said.
The United States reported over the weekend that 160 soldiers training Ukrainian troops had withdrawn from Ukraine.
Canada on Saturday announced that it was temporarily closing its embassy in Kiev and relocating its operations to a temporary office in Elviv (west) due to deteriorating situation caused by the deployment of Russian troops at the border.
