After several flight delays and cancellations, a couple from the Quebec region decided to take drastic measures to get back to Pont-Rouge: they took an Uber over 800 kilometers.
Melissa Saint-Laurent and her husband were supposed to be returning from a trip to Florida via San Antonio last Sunday, but not everything went as planned.
“When we got to the airport, they already told us that our flight was canceled and they were rebooking us on a new flight, she explains. Our flight was supposed to be at 2:30am, but it was delayed to 3:30am, and then to 4:30am. .
The flight was eventually canceled and delayed again the next day.
The couple was finally able to fly to New York on Tuesday.
But more delays and cancellations Wednesday due to wildfire-related weather left Quebecers turning to the Uber option.
“When our driver arrived, we explained our story to him and we asked him to bring us to customs,” said Mrs. Saint-Laurent. He offered to take his passport to take us home.
Total bill is $1100 US or $1450 Canadian.
“I contacted my insurance company and they told me to file my claim and they sent me all the paperwork to deal with, which would be a different story,” she continues.
Melissa Saint-Laurent says, however, that she has fond memories of her trip.
“It makes us afraid to travel again,” she said.
United Airlines declined our interview request on the matter.
