COVID-19 in BC: The province creates new records for daily cases, active cases and hospitalization

Vancouver – More than 1,000 Kovid-19 cases have been reported in British Columbia in the past 48 hours, health officials said at a live meeting on the coronavirus epidemic on Thursday.

As the province does not report new cases on Remembrance Day, Thursday’s numbers reflect two different reporting periods. BC recorded 536 additional cases from Tuesday to Wednesday and another 594 cases – the new daily record – from Wednesday to Thursday.

Four others have died in the last 48 hours, Regional Health Officer Dr Bonnie Henry said.

Since the outbreak began, there have been 20,368 COVID-19 cases and 288 deaths in BC. There are currently 5,793 active cases, the highest active caseload the province has ever seen.

Of that total, 155 were hospitalized, a record, topping the list of 149 people admitted to hospital on April 2 with COVID-19. Forty-four of those currently hospitalized are in intensive care.

The record-breaking update came next Update on Province Modeling Of the pandemic, Henry described the recent, dramatic increase in case numbers at this time, but was not unique.

“We are in a place where we are challenged and we don’t want to be here now, but this is our reality, and we are dealing with everyone around the world,” she said.

The Provincial Health Officer was again asked to “back away” from their contacts with others and work to reduce the transmission of the coronavirus.

In recent weeks, Henry said, BC has doubled its daily cacheload once every 13 days.

“We need to get our social interactions back to levels that can control the spread of our public health and contact tracing,” she said. “It’s in our hands.”

Most of the 1,130 new cases reported Thursday were in the Lower Mainland, 808 in the Fraser Health area and 249 in Vancouver Coastal Health.

Elsewhere in BC, 34 additional cases were reported in Interior Health in the last 24 hours, as well as 23 in Northern Health and 16 in Island Health.

Thursday’s update also includes six new COVID-19 outbreaks at BC healthcare facilities. Three outbreaks were reported with 41 active outbreaks of coronavirus, including 35 long-term care or assistive-residential homes and six intensive care settings.

There are six new outbreaks Fraser Health announced Wednesday three, At Charlwell Longley Gardens, Peace Portal Seniors Village and The Horizon in Elim Village.

The other three new outbreaks include two other care homes – Dania Home and Finnish Manor, both in Barnaby – and an intensive care outlet. Nanimo Regional General Hospital.
