Data theft at Desjardins: 5 things you need to know to file your claim

The Quebec Superior Court has approved Deszardins’ $ 200 million settlement agreement for personal information leaked class actions revealed in June 2019.

1. Nothing to do (yet)

Individuals affected by a personal data leak from a financial institution do not need to contact Desjardins to file their claim.

“By July 21st and until October 21st, Desjardins members and clients will receive a unique authentication code in their Acès D Internet Mailbox to file their claim,” explained Jean-Benoît Turcotti, of the Desjardins Group.

Those who do not have access D will receive a letter and notices will be published in the newspapers.

2. Two types of complaints

Members and customers affected by a data leak can make two types of claims, one for wasting time and the other for identity theft.

Each type of claim comes with a different amount of compensation.

“The first can cost as much as $ 90 and the second as much as $ 1,000 for wasting time, which can lead to identity theft,” he said. Turcotti said.

3. Forms to fill out and documents to provide

After obtaining the special certification code, members will have six months to submit their claim request www.regulationdesjardins.com.

They must fill out a form and indicate the type of complaint they wish to make.

Individuals claiming for identity theft must provide documents to prove that they actually committed identity theft.

4. When will you receive the amount?

Those who claim for lost time should receive their claim by 2023.

For those who claim for identity theft, payments are made once a year for three years.

A representative of the Desjardins Group is advised to contact the Settlement website to find out the exact terms of payment.

5. It is too late to take action on your own

Members affected by the data breach will automatically be included in the Agreement if they do not leave before the deadline.

“There is a deadline to break away from the collective settlement agreement set up last April, so the relevant persons who have not now withdrawn are included in the agreement,” said Jean-Benoit Turcotti.
